Extreme Lateral Interbody Fusion (XLIF)

Extreme Lateral Interbody Fusion (XLIF) is our signature in Malaysia and is a minimally invasive lumbar spine procedure designed to relieve pressure on spinal nerves and restore stability to the lower back.

The surgery is performed through a small incision on the side of the body, allowing the surgeon to reach the spine without cutting through major back muscles, helping reduce tissue damage and speed recovery.

How the procedure works

  1. A small incision is made on the side of the abdomen
  2. The spine is reached by gently passing between muscle layers
  3. The damaged disc is removed
  4. A supportive spacer (cage) is placed to restore disc height
  5. This helps relieve nerve pressure, improve alignment, and stabilise the spine
  6. Additional fixation may be added when needed for long-term support

Why patients choose ACDF

  1. Minimally invasive approach with less muscle disruption
  2. Reduced blood loss compared to traditional open surgery
  3. Effective relief of leg and back pain
  4. Restoration of spinal height and alignment
  5. Faster recovery and earlier mobilisation in many patients

Safety and outcomes

XLIF is a well-established minimally invasive spine technique supported by modern surgical planning and nerve monitoring technologies. When performed by trained spine specialists, it offers a safe and effective option for appropriately selected patients.

SUMMARY

XLIF stabilises the spine and relieves nerve pressure through a gentle side approach supporting recovery with less disruption to the back
